Oliver Townend is Britain’s leading three-day-eventer. And this week, he’s spoken out in favour of the decision to have the London 2012 Olympic equestrian events in Greenwich Park.
Talking to insidethegames.biz, Oliver says, “Having London 2012 coming up is a huge bonus for our sport.
“I know there’s been a lot of controversy about holding the equestrian events in Greenwich Park, but I think it’s going to be fantastic for local people. They will be able to step outside their front door and watch a really great event. It’s a big opportunity for us to explain what we do to a new audience. I can’t think of a more exciting sport to be watching on a nice sunny day, whether you are interested in horses or not.
I am really looking forward to London 2012.”
Both the equestrian and the modern pentathlon events will be held at Greenwich Park in London 2012, following a decision made in March by Greenwich Council’s Planning Board. The planning permission was granted to London 2012 along with 42 separate conditions, all of which must be met.
Seb Coe, chairman of London 2012, has made five pledges regarding Greenwich Park:
1. to protect the park
2. to ensure as much of the park stays open for as long as possible
3. to leave a legacy for future generations
4. to showcase Greenwich to the world
5. to listen to local people about potential 2012 issues

London Burlesque Festival Opens at Café de Paris
Last night’s London Burlesque Festival opening was a glamorous affair attended by media, the general public and stars of the UK and international burlesque stage.
The sumptuous Café de Paris is a great venue for this sort of event and the evening got off to a saucy start with, quite appropriately, a lingerie fashion parade. Announced by Bond Girl burlesquer Agent Lynch, the retro-styled Bettie Page collection by festival sponsor Secrets In Lace was modelled by a series of burlesque beauties.
Next up was the Red Carpet Rollout – where the festival’s top performers were introduced by the husky-voiced host, Ivy Paige. It was a nice touch and a tantalising taste of things to come. Despite the volcano situation, this year’s festival will feature artists from Antwerp to Australia, New York to NZ and, of course, the best of British burlesquers (including Visit London-featured Kiki Kaboom).
Impressive acts in the first half included festival organiser Beeby Rose from Amsterdam, who fluttered our feathers with her red and gold parrot. Then there was Bristol lass Bettie Bottom Dollar, whose Charlie Chaplin burlesque was my favourite act of the evening. We also had some fire eating, or rather fire licking, and unzipping (!) from hot Italian Miss Honey Lulu.
Part two featured a swing dance strip by Missy Fatale and Ben from Swingcopation. And there was Equador the Wizard’s magic boylesque with a Queen soundtrack, plus Perth trio Sugar Blue Burlesque with their “cherry mambo”… cherry ripe!
It’s only just begun and I can’t wait for the rest of the delights in store as London Burlesque Festival week continues.
